Ironically, I find steel to be quite flexible and forgiving as a material to work with. I came to metalwork just over ten years ago and love the way steel can be shaped, merged or amended with found objects, changed and manipulated. The process of cutting, heating, and welding is challenging technically and physically, and produces surprises sometimes. Sometimes an idea grows from a found object. My principle inspiration derives from observing birds and the natural world.
I’m intrigued by birds, and see them daily where I live near the ocean. The first birds I made were needle felted and from tin cans. The steel birds are the beginning of a series I hope to make of different birds I’ve seen or see on a regular basis. Birds' homes are another fascination to me. I’ve used stone and granite with some of my work. The steel and stone sculptures play with the ideas of whimsy and solidity, motion and stillness. Recently I’ve also incorporated wax and wool felting into the work with steel to play with textures.
This site has photos of a variety of my work, many of which are already sold. Please feel free to contact me about commissions if you see something you like. Some pieces are one off, others can be replicated. Thank you for your interest in my work. You can also find me on Instagram @steelcardinals. There are several large pieces in yards/gardens around Peaks Island. Keep your eyes open-you may come upon one!
